Northam Race Day - Sunday 24th October 2010

In the last two years the social club have travelled out to Northam at the beginning of October to attend a country race meeting. Unfortunately the weather has not been the best on those days, so this year it was decided to go a few weeks later. And this proved to be a good idea.
On Sunday 24th October 13 members of the club travelled to Northam for the running of the Northam Cup.

The day started with pre-departure champagne and nibbles at Brian’s place.
Being the host who will do anything to make his guests happy, Brian was only too pleased to assist a couple of the ladies apply sunscreen. For some reason the ladies refused Brian’s kind offer to rub it on their fronts as well as their backs

With champagne and nibbles in hand everyone then boarded our chauffeur driven luxury mini bus. Good old rock and roll played over the stereo system as we made our way to the Northam Racecourse

Once we had found our private marquee on the edge of the track and got ourselves set up, it was down to the serious business of picking the winners

. . Some members studied the form guide, read the steward’s reports, looked at the expert’s tips, checked the breeding of each animal and studied the track condition before arriving at their decision. And some members simply used the centuries old tried and true method of eenie meenie minee moe. Bets ranged from 50 cents to over a hundred dollars at times. For most of us the day could be summed up as “you win some, you lose some”. Unfortunately the two horses we backed as a group bet in the main race are still running.

Being the most important day on the Northam Race Club calendar most patrons were dressed in their finest attire, including members of our group. There was plenty of eye candy for everyone to enjoy with the usual differing opinions on a person’s fashion sense.
The lady who was voted the best dressed on the day was also very lucky to have her photo taken with a couple of drooling male members of our group. Something she will no doubt treasure for the rest of her life.

Once the final race had been won and lost it was back on the bus for the ride home. We may not have sent the bookies broke but that didn’t matter. The day had consisted of all the excitement of a day at the races, a wonderful lunch due to a great combined effort, and lots of fun and laughter. Thanks to all who went along and made it a fantastic day.
Thanks to Brian for organising the event and for the blurb and to Rob for photos.
