Anglo/Burmese Association Fund Raiser - Saturday 28 March, 2009

The blurb below is a copy of the thank you email from Brian sent to members. Everyone should be extremely proud of a great fundraising effort for such a worthwhile cause. Thanks everyone.

Hi everyone

The BBQ/fundraiser at my place last Saturday night was a great success. About 15 people turned up throughout the night and were very generous in their support of a very worthy cause. The sausages were cooked to perfection (for a change) or at least were not burned beyond recognition. Caroline made her usual wonderful salads, and Jeanette and Jenny kindly brought along homemade pavlova and trifle for yummy desserts.

We had a “guess how many coins are in the jar” competition with first prize being a bottle of top shelf red wine (a $2 clean skin from Uncle Dan’s but it was sitting on the top shelf). The winner was Jeanette with a guess of 272 coins. We are still trying to figure out if that was a look of disbelief, or disappointment, that she had won (come on, the wine doesn’t taste that bad).

The monster raffle was just that. The prize on offer was a washing basket full of goodies such as more “top shelf” red wine, hand lotion, Aussie thongs, hand towel, coffee mug, stubbie holder, carry bag, chips, cake, shortbread bikkies and a whole lot more. Second and third prizes were Easter eggs and chocolates kindly donated by Shaz. And the winner was....drum roll....me!! Bummer!!! I was the one trying to get rid of a lot of the out of date edibles and rubbish..er..quality items. However, Jenny quickly made an offer to buy the hand lotion and thongs for 5 bucks (the thongs to be worn as earrings in Nepal, weird girl that one), which I was happy to take and donate to the cause, and the rest of the prize was handed back to be redrawn.

This time it was won by Adie, with Dave winning second prize (or by now it was third prize) and third prize (or by now it was fourth prize) was won by...actually I’m not sure (by this time my head was hurting trying to keep up)...but you know who you are. So as always with every function organised by the social club, a lot of fun and laughter was had by all.

The generosity of those people attending was unbelievable. About $80 was spent on the raffle and game. Combining this with the entry money, and a touch over $200 was raised on the night.

A couple of weeks ago six of us were lucky enough to be invited to the Ascot races by a company that works for me. The 6 who went along were myself and Caroline, John, Shaz, Aly and Les. We did not have much luck at picking the winners. Apparently it’s not often a 500 to 1 chance wins (now they tell us. We thought the higher the number the better the chances). But every now and then by some stroke of luck, our horse did come in (when all the ones in front fell over). At the end of the day everyone was kind enough to donate our winnings (almost $50) to the cause.

At the last couple of club functions the hat has been passed around and loose change collected to also help raise some funds. Once again club members have been very generous. In some cases people donated $10 entry to the BBQ, even though they knew they couldn’t be there. Thank you to Steve Topolopolopoloulous.

So the final amount raised by club members over the last 2-3 weeks is $286.15. Which is just absolutely fantastic. And as we know, one Australian dollar goes a long, long, way in Burma. Caroline, through the Anglo-Burmese Association she belongs to, will now ensure that every cent is spent wisely to help support orphans, and also support families whilst a member of the family learns new skills, so they can work towards attaining a better way of life. And that is one thing I like about Caroline’s organisation. They don’t just hand out money. They help people to improve themselves, so they can help themselves reach a better standard of living.

Hopefully I haven’t forgotten to mention or thank anyone. Well done to everyone for helping raise a terrific amount of money for a very worthy cause.

Brian
